The video shows how the scammer tricked the Russian. In the above viral video, a cricket match is going on where the cameraman is just showing the cricket pitch.
However, according to the investigators, there was no such match going on. There were just a few people who were acting as professional cricketers. The so-called professional cricketers in the video are locals from the village who were paid ₹400 per match. The players were also given T-Shirts with forgery team names like Chennai Fighters and Gandhinagar challengers. After receiving the bet from the Russians, the swindler will contact the umpire via walkie-talkie and further instruct the batter to make his next move according to the bets.
Police has arrested the masterminds behind running this fake tournament
Four accused named Sefi Mahammad Saqib Riyazzudin, Koli Mahamad Abubakar, Davda Sadiq Abdulmajeed and Dawda Shoyeb Abdulmjeed were running the racket. The mastermind behind the racket belongs to Gujrat. All four accused has been arrested by Gujrat Police last week.
The tournament was organized the days after the closing of IPL 2022 and more than nine games had been played before the police came to know about the racket.
To make the tournament look real, the swindler bought cricket equipment, cameras, and speakers and used the fake crowd noise to give a real IPL-like tournament feels.
The bets were taken through the social media app ‘Telegram’
The majority of the betters were from Russia. The bets were taken through Telegram. As per Indian law, betting is completely illegal in India but during big tournaments like IPL betting takes place on a large scale throughout the country. As per Indian law, if found guilty of breaking the law the accused can be imprisoned for three months with a penalty of ₹200.
According to a report by International Centre for Sports Security(ICSS), the betting market in India is estimated to be around $130 billion.
IPL is celebrated as a great sports festivals all over India and such scams are sludge to its name and reputation.
