The design for Commonwealth Games 2022 medals were unveiled earlier in May. The medals for the 2022 Commonwealth Games have been designed keeping the visually para-athletes in mind.

With less than three weeks left for the kick-off of the Commonwealth Games 2022, the look and feel of the medals have been revealed.

The medals for the Commonwealth 2022 games are designed by three students Amber Alys, Francesca Wilcox and Catarina Rodrigues

The medals are specially designed by three students. These medals will be given to the athletes including the para-athletes. Commonwealth Games 2022 will have 19 sports events and eight para-sports event throughout the event.

The medals have been designed in such a way that the visually impaired athletes can feel the design of the medals.

The design of the medals was shortlisted through a competition which was organised by Birmingham’s School Of Jewellery and the Commonwealth Game organisers.

These students also designed the ribbon and the box for the medal. The ribbon attached to the medal is adjustable, so that it can be worn perfectly by athletes, even if the height of the athlete is tall.

Meaning of the designs in medals

The medals centre area art design resembles the aerial map of the host region’s road and canal network which reflects the journey of athletes competing in the Commonwealth Games. The design of the medal box also resembles the aerial map design of the hosting region.

Weight and diameter of the medals

The gold and the silver medals weigh around 150 grams while the bronze medal weighs 130 grams. The medals are 63mm in diameter and 74.3 mm in length.

The competition will begin on 28th July and will end on 8th August.These medals will be presented at the victory ceremonies at all the competition venues of the Commonwealth 2022, Birmingham games.

Overall, 1875 medals have been produced for the 283 medal events that are part of the Commonwealth Games 2022. This is also the first time when there will be more medal events for women(136) events than the men(134) events. The remaining 13 medals will be awarded in the mixed events.
