Veerendra Heggade is one of the well-known philanthropists who has worked extensively for the development in fields of health, education, and rural India.

Veerandara hails from Karnataka. He is part of Jain Bunt community and was born in Udupi. His social work and contributions have made a significant role in the revival of traditional theatre art of southern India, Yakshagana. He was born on 25 November, 1948 and is aged 73 years.
He has no sons and his heir is his younger brother Harshendra. He was born to Rathnamma Heggade and Ratnavarma Heggade and has three younger brothers named Surendra Kumar Heggade, Rajendra Kumar Heggade, and Harshendra.
Heggade has been serving as the administrator of Dharmasthala temple, Karnataka for more than 50 years now. His nomination for Rajya Sabha was announced along with the nomination of, Indian Olympic athlete PT Usha, composer Ilayaraja, and screenwriter V Vijayendra Prasad.
All the nominated candidates are celebrated personalities who have performed exceptionally in their respective fields and made significant contributions to society.

After being nominated, Veerandara Heggade also shared his gratitude for being selected for the esteemed position and wrote, “It was an unexpected honour, since there was no effort from our side. I’m also surprised that Prime Minister has information about contributions made by people for the growth of the nation.”
In order to spread awareness about options for self-employment amongst rural youth and to give training, he founded the Rural Development and Self-Employment Training Institute (RDSETI) in 1982.
This can be seen as the signal to new demographic areas being approached by the party and increase this base among different groups of the southern region of India.
