Nepomniachtchi has already qualified for a second straight world championship match with the remarkable score of 9/13 in the 2022 Candidates Chess Tournament, which has not yet ended. He is now only the second player in history to win two Candidates tournaments back-to-back, following his compatriot GM Vasily Smyslov who accomplished this feat in 1953 and 1956.

The 2023 World Chess Championship challenger will be determined by the eight-player 2022 Candidates Tournament. The competition will take place at Madrid, Spain’s Palace of Santoa from June 16 to July 5, 2022, with the World Championship following in the early months of 2023. Since the inaugural Candidates tournament in 2013, the format has been a double round robin.

Magnus Carlsen will face the winner in a match for the global chess championship. If Carlsen decides not to participate, the top two finishers will play a match for the world championship. Ding Liren, Alireza Firouzja, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Teimour Radjabov, Hikaru Nakamura, Richárd Rapport, and Ian Nepomniachtchi make up the final eight competitors.

By drawing with GM Richard Rapport on Sunday, GM Ian Nepomniachtchi won the 2022 Candidates Tournament with one round to spare. Nepomniachtchi will now face GM Magnus Carlsen in the 2023 World Championship.

After defeating GM Jan-Krzysztof Duda, GM Hikaru Nakamura is in exclusive possession of second position. Radjabov-Caruana and Firouzja-Ding both finished in draws. On Monday, Ding and Nakamura will square off in the decisive round; to advance to the next round, the Chinese player must win. Nepomniachtchi will play the second-placed player if Carlsen decides not to defend his championship.
