In Sunday’s Interwetten European Darts Matchplay final, Luke Humphries beat Rowby-John Rodriguez 8-7 to win a stunning fourth European Tour championship of 2022.

The ninth of thirteen PDC European Tour competitions on the 2022 PDC Pro Tour was the Interwetten European Darts Matchplay. From July 1–3, 2022, the competition was held at the Trier Arena in Trier, Germany. There were 48 players in the field, and the winner took home £25,000 of the £140,000 in prize money.

Rodriguez was denied his first senior PDC title by Humphries, who rallied from 4-0 down to win the exciting final leg and win the top prize of £25,000 in Trier. In order to reach his first PDC ranking final, Rodriguez had to overcome three major champions, but Humphries’ amazing comeback propelled the Newbury ace to his fifth championship of the year.
Humphries had easily advanced to Sunday’s championship match after defeating host-nation qualifier Lukas Wenig 6-2 and Ian White 6-1 with a 101 average. Following a convincing victory over Stephen Bunting in the semifinals, the former UK Open runner-up extended his winning streak to 13 legs, setting up a titanic matchup with the former World Youth finalist.
Rodriguez has put himself squarely in the running for Betfred World Matchplay qualification despite losing in such a terrible manner after winning the £10,000 second-place prize at Arena Trier. In order to go to Sunday’s finals, the 2021 World Cup of Darts finalist defeated UK Open champion Danny Noppert and top seed Gerwyn Price. Earlier in the day, he also ruined the aspirations of German number one Gabriel Clemens. Then, Rodriguez won six straight games to defeat Nathan Aspinall 6-2 in the round of 16, and in a thrilling final-four match, Rodriguez overcame a 5-2 deficit to defeat Madars Razma.
