The All-England Club has a rigorous dress code guideline that requires players to wear all-white attire, including undergarments, socks, shoelaces, and sweat headbands.

WIMBLEDON PLAYERS MUST WEAR ALL WHITE CLOTHES:

Wimbledon’s uniform policy states:

Competitors must be clothed in appropriate tennis apparel that is virtually totally white from the time they enter the court environment. Off-white and cream are not considered white.

Only a small color line, no wider than 10mm, is permissible on the neckline, sleeves, skirts, and headgear.

The Victorians felt that white was the greatest tint for competitors to wear, hence the all-white dress requirement.

The Games were first contested in 1877, with the overwhelming view would be that white would be best for hiding grease stains and cooling participants down – as white reflects heat.

The restrictions have been strengthened over time, with umpires pausing matches to ensure participants follow the rules.

There have been requests to abandon Wimbledon’s all-white clothing requirement, particularly for female players, for whom the rigorous regulations can be problematic if they are on their period.

DRESS CODE FOR ROYAL BOX:

Wimbledon has little or no dress requirement for the regular spectator. So the all-whites may stay at home and so they can chop and change as they wish.

However, there is an unofficial dress code in the Royal Box on Centre Court.

Those invited to the east stand must wear a jacket and appear semi-presentable.

In 2015, Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton was refused access to the Royal Box for Roger Federer vs. Novak Djokovic’s final due to improper attire.

The then two-time world championship, now seven-time world champion, was wearing a sweatshirt. And cap but not a suit and tie and hence was denied admittance, yet he was welcomed back in 2018 – see below.
