The incumbent Olympic champion in men’s javelin increased his national record on June 14 at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, after winning that illustrious gold medal in Tokyo with a throw of 89.30 metres.
However, Neeraj Chopra came in second place to local favourite Oliver Helander, who threw 89.93 metres.
Neeraj Chopra earned his first medal of the year on June 18, four days after that, in the Kuortane Games in Finland. But this time, with a meagre throw of 86.69 metres. The 24-year-old Indian most crucially defeated Anderson Peters of Grenada, the current world champion, twice. With a throw of 86.60 metres, Peters placed third in Turku.
However, Neeraj Chopra’s third-attempt tumble in the Kuortane Games overshadowed his victory. The recipient of the Padma Shri and Arjuna awards later assuaged concerns about potential damage by stating that he is “feeling okay and looking forward to” the Stockholm Diamond League.
The big test is about to start
The two Olympic medalists from Tokyo, Jakub Vadlejch (silver) and Vitezslav Vesely (bronze), will again compete in Stockholm. The two Czechs will be motivated to outperform the Indian superstar. Oliver Helander of Finland and Julian Weber of Germany will also be competing.
However, the only live javelin thrower to surpass the 90-meter mark is the renowned German Johannes Vetter, who will be absent from the competition because of an injury. Vetter was the 2017 world champion.
Murali Sreeshankar of India will compete against some of the greatest in the world in the men’s long jump. The favourites are Greece’s Tentoglou Miltiadis, who won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, and Thobias Montler, who took second place at the World Indoor Championships.
