Who Is STANLEY And Why Is The NHL’s Stanley Cup Named After Him
Whoever wins the NHL Championship will be awarded the Stanley Cup, amongst the most prestigious prizes in sports.
But who is Stanley, and why is the Cup dedicated after him? What did he do while serving in the Canadian government?
WHO IS THE STANLEY CUP AFFILIATED WITH?
The Stanley Cup was first handed in 1893 to mostly enthusiast ice hockey clubs, with professional teams not permitted to participate until 1906.
In 1915, the National Hockey Organization and indeed the Pacific Coast Hockey Organization agreed that the winners of their respective leagues should compete for the overall championship, with the Stanley Cup being the honorary NHL trophy in 1926.
By 1947, it had become the official trophy awarded to NHL victors.
The Stanley Cup is nicknamed after Lord Stanley of Preston, also renowned as the 16th Earl of Derby in the United Kingdom.
Stanley’s children, especially his sons, were huge fans and participants of ice hockey, therefore he donated the Cup to pro teams in Canada in 1893. He died in 1908, the same year top teams began competing for it.
WHO WAS LORD PRESTON STANLEY?
He was a British Conservative politician who was born in January 1841 as Frederick Arthur Stanley.
His father, Edward, was the 14th Earl of Derby and British Party Leader in 1852, 1858-1859, & 1866-1868.
In the 1860s, Frederick held the post of Parliament (MP) for Preston. North Lancashire, and Blackpool (all in England), and has been a member of the British government.
Stanley held a number of posts under Government Ministers Benjamin Disraeli and Robert Cecil. Including Chairperson of the Board of Trade and Sec of Defense for War. A forerunner to the contemporary Secretary of State for Defence.
Back in 1888, the British Monarch is Queen Victoria. Who may have been growing on in years, and Stanley was appointed to the sixth post in Canada.
He was in office from May 1888 until September 1893. When he returned to England following the death of his brother, the 15th Earl of Derby.
He did, of course, leave the Stanley Cup and from the other side of the North Atlantic.
Lord Stanley died on June 14, 1908, at the age of 67, in Kent, southern England.
