2022 Highlights of BWF Men’s Singles Top Players

1) Viktor Axelson

Axelsen began the 2022 season as the world’s number one on the BWF World Ranking. He became the world’s number one on November 30, 2021. He advanced to the German Open 2022 semi-finals, where he was eliminated in three games by Indian player Lakshya Sen. (13-21, 21-12, 20-22). On March 20, Axelsen won the All England Open in convincing fashion, dropping only one game throughout the tournament as he defeated Lakshya Sen in the finals in straight sets with a score of 21-10, 21-15. Later, Axelsen continued his strong form and won two successive tournaments in Indonesia including BWF World Tour Super 1000 Event Indonesia Open.

2) Kento Momota

The 2022 season got off to a rocky start for Momota. Apart from sliding to second place in the global rankings after his injury recovery, he has not performed at his pre-injury level. He competed in three tournaments in his first season: the All England Open, the German Open, and the 2022 Badminton Asia Championships.

Momota was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the All England Open by Malaysian Lee Zii Jia, 21-7, 13-21, 21-11. His Japanese compatriot Kenta Nishimoto beat him out of the German Open in the first round with a score of 21-23, 9-21 in two straight sets. In the opening round of the Badminton Asia Championships, he was upset by Indonesian Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo 21-17, 17-21, 7-21.

In the first round of the Thailand Open, he was eliminated by Zhao Junpeng in two straight sets, 8-21, 11-21. He was beaten out of the Indonesia Open in the first round, 19-21, 21-19, 14-21, by 13th-ranked Rasmus Gemke of Denmark.

3) Anders Antonsen

Anders Antonsen is a Danish badminton player. At the 2015 European Junior Championships, he won the gold medal in the boys singles category and was awarded European Young Player of the Year. He was a member of the national team that won the European Men’s Team Championships in 2016 and 2018, as well as the European Mixed Team Championships in 2017, 2019, and 2021. Antonsen earned gold at the 2019 Minsk European Games and the European Championships in 2021, as well as silver at the 2017 European Championships and the 2019 World Championships.

4) Chou Tien-chen

Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan won his first BWF Super Series championship at the 2014 French Open, defeating Wang Zhengming of China 10–21, 25–23, 21–19 in the finals. He won a record three consecutive Bitburger Open Grand Prix Gold championships from 2012 to 2014.

5) Lee Zii Jia

Lee Zii Jia is a badminton player from Malaysia. However, there was conjecture in January 2022 that Lee had signalled his intention to leave the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), claiming dissatisfaction with the organisation, though the reasons were never revealed.

Lee earned his first title of the year in May, defeating Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie 21-17, 23-21 at the 2022 Badminton Asia Championships. He became the sixth Malaysian man to win the Asian Championships in men’s singles. Lee won his first BWF World Tour Super 500 title in the 2022 Thailand Open on May 22, 2022, defeating Li Shifeng of China 17-21, 21-11, 23-21 in 70 minutes.

6) Anthony Sinisuka Ginting

Anthony Sinisuka Ginting is an Indonesian badminton player. After capturing a bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Games, he rose to prominence. At the 2020 Olympics, he won bronze in the men’s singles event. He became the first Youth Olympic badminton medalist to win a medal at the Olympics after winning bronze in 2014. Ginting was a member of the Indonesian squad that won the Thomas Cup in 2020.

7) Chen Long

Chen Long is a Chinese professional badminton player. He is a two-time World and Asian champion, as well as the 2016 Olympic champion. Between December 2014 and June 2016, Chen was the World No. 1 in men’s singles and held the position for 76 weeks. He began his international career by winning the Asian and World Junior Championships’ boys’ singles title in 2007, and he won his first professional tournament, the Philippines Open, in 2009. In September 2021, Chen competed in the Chinese National Championships, declaring that it would be his last.

Leonardus Jonatan Christie is an Indonesian badminton player who plays singles and is a part of the Tangkas Specs club. He won the men’s singles title at both the 2017 Southeast Asian Games and the 2018 Asian Games. Christie was a member of the Indonesian squad that won the Thomas Cup in 2020.

9) Loh Kean Yew

During the 2022 Indonesia Masters, Loh, the eighth seed, defeated Toma Jr Popov, Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo, and Lu Guangzu to get to the tournament’s semi-finals, where he faced Chou Tien-chen, the third seed and world number four. In the semifinals of the German Open, Lakshya upset World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen, but fell in the finals to Kunlavut Vitidsarn. He then defeated World No. 3 Anders Antonsen and World No. 7 Lee Zii Jia to reach the finals of the 2022 All England Open. Viktor Axelsen, on the other hand, defeated him in the finals 10-21, 15-21. He later pulled out of the Swiss Open because to weariness from competing in two consecutive BWF championship finals.

Lakshya Sen was a member of the Indian men’s team that competed in the Thomas Cup in 2022. Sen won his match against Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, 8-21 21-17 21-16, as the team went on to win the Thomas Cup by defeating Indonesia 3-0.
