The event was supposed to take place in China. However, the AFC confirmed on 14 May 2022 that China would not be able to host the tournament owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and China’s Zero-COVID policy.

Teams and results

The Asian qualifying for the World Cup was held throughout the first two rounds of qualification. Qatar only competed in the second round to qualify for the 2023 Asian Cup, as they were already qualified for the World Cup as hosts. China’s participation in the second round was only to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, given they had already qualified for the Asian Cup as the host nation.

Timor-Leste was disqualified from the qualification tournament when it was discovered that they had fielded a total of twelve ineligible players in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification matches and other tournaments. Timor-Leste was allowed to compete in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers even though FIFA had not barred them from doing so.

Qualifying for the 23 slots joining the host nation China began on June 6, 2019. Because of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which will take place in November and December 2022, the event will be held in June and July 2023, rather than the usual January/February. Because of safety concerns relating to the COVID-19 epidemic, North Korea withdrew from the qualifying round. By defeating Myanmar 10–0, Japan became the first team to qualify.

For the first time in 55 years, Hong Kong qualified for the Asian Cup for the first time since 1968, ending the longest gap in AFC Asian Cup history. Tajikistan qualified for the Asian Cup for the first time, whereas Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, both CAFA members, were the only Central Asian countries to miss out on the competition.

All of the 2007 edition’s co-hosts qualified for the Asian Cup, with Indonesia and Malaysia returning since then. The only two West Asian teams to miss out on the final tournament were Kuwait and Yemen. India, like in 2019, was the only South Asian side to qualify for the event, and it was also the first time India qualified for two years in a row.

The Philippines, Turkmenistan, and Yemen are the only teams who did not qualify for this tournament after competing in the previous one.
