On Saturday night, Edgar Berlanga won a unanimous decision over Alexis Angulo in the main event of a Top Rank show at the Hulu Theatre inside Madison Square Garden in New York, extending his perfect record to 20-0.

The seventh round of the battle will be remembered for Berlanga attempting to bite Angulo on the left shoulder and subsequently his left ear, in scenes reminiscent of Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield 2 in 1997.

Fortunately for the 25-year-old, the referee failed to see his attempted foul and instead issued a warning to Angulo for striking behind the head before the fight resumed.

Berlanga won a resounding decision after ten relatively unremarkable rounds, with the judges scoring the bout 98-92 and 99-1 twice in his favour.

This is ‘The Chosen One’s fourth straight points victory after a remarkable start to his professional career that included 16 consecutive first-round knockout victories.

What Edgar Berlanga Claimed?

He stated why he attempted to take a couple of chunks out of Angulo in the seventh round after the fight.

“He was flinging elbows at me.” I was about to give him a Mike Tyson-style beating. When asked about the incident, Berlanga claimed, “He kept throwing his elbows, and I didn’t want to get cut, but I was ready to bite him like Mike Tyson.”

When ‘Iron Mike’ first met Holyfield in the ring in 1996, ‘The Real Deal’ put on a spectacular performance to pull off the upset, stopping Tyson in the eleventh round and setting up a rematch the following year.

All hell broke loose in the second round, as Tyson bit Holyfield’s ear twice and was disqualified as a result.

The ‘Bite Fight’ generated headlines all around the world and is now remembered as one of the most iconic sporting events of all time. After several years, the two reconciled after Tyson apologised to Holyfield.

Earlier this year, the heavyweight boxing great released ‘Mike Bites,’ the latest product from his cannabis company, to mock one of his most iconic incidents.

They’re just a bag of miniature edible cannabis treats in the shape of an ear, with a portion missing to reflect the piece of Holyfield’s ear Tyson bit off in 1997.
