Who Was Sarsenapati Hambirrao Mohite?
Legendary Shivaji Maharaj’s army’s chief military leader was Hambirrao Mohite. He was a capable military officer who led Shivaji’s expeditions and afterwards worked under Sambhaji.
In the year 1632, he was born as Hansaji Mohite in Talbid, Satara, Ahmednagar Sultanate (Now in Maharashtra, India), to Sambhaji Mohite, a military commander.
He had two brothers, Harifrao and Shankarji, and two sisters, Soyarabai and Annubai. Soyrabai married Shivaji later in life, which makes Hambirrao Shivaji’s brother-in-law.
He married Lakshmibai Hambirrao Mohite. Santaji, Rangoji, Chandoji and Ranasing are Hambirrao’s four sons and he also had one daughter named Tarabai. After marrying Shivaji’s son Rajaram, Tarabai became the Maratha queen.
His Career
Shivaji named Hambirrao his Sarsenapati when Prataprao Gujar died.
Soon after this, he quickly rose through the ranks of the Maratha army, defeating Mughal leader Bahlol Khan and restoring the Maratha army’s shattered morale. Hambirrao commanded the Gadag to capture and defeat Adilshahi commander Husein Khan of Koppal in 1677.
Following Shivaji’s death in 1680, Hambirrao supported his elder nephew Sambhaji (Shivaji’s elder son) in his claim to the Maratha crown, despite courtiers’ demands that Rajaram (Shivaji’s younger son) be crowned. He also assisted Sambhaji in his anti-Mughal efforts.
On the 30th of January 1681, Hambirrao Mohite and Sambhaji launched an unexpected attack on Burhanpur. Burhanpur was then ruled by Subedaar Jehan Khan who had only 200 people in his army, whereas Hambirrao had 20,000 people in his army.
The Mughals lacked the power to stand up to Hambirrao’s force, so they got defeated easily. And as a consequence, Marathas obtained assets worth more than a crore Hons.
In a fight in Kalyan-Bhiwandi on March 17, 1683, Hambirrao was defeated by Ranamast Khan, one of Aurangzeb’s most formidable chieftains. This was one of his major defeats.
On December 16, 1687, Hambirrao commanded the battle of Wai against the Mughals, defeating a much larger Mughal force.
Death Cause Of Sarsenapati Hambirrao Mohite
During a fight in Wai province in 1687, Hambirrao defeated Rustum Khan, but a cannonball struck Hambirrao, which resulted in his death. He was just 57 years old at the time of his death.
