To make matters even more bizarre, Joc Pederson claimed that the whole feud with Tommy Pham began with a fantasy football quarrel.ย The strangest story in baseball right now involves fantasy football and bad group chat jokes.
On Friday, Reds outfielder Tommy Pham slapped Giants outfielder Joc Pederson and the two were separated after a pregame argument. On Saturday, (grainy) video of the incident surfaced, showing Pham loading up and giving Pederson a pretty hard smack, earning himself a three-game suspension from Major League Baseball in the process.
What Are The Claims On Both The Sides
Pham claimed Pederson crossed the line with a joke about his old team, the Padres, in a group chat with other MLB players, and there was also a dispute over a fantasy football league involving “big money.”
Pham called the group chat comments “disrespectful” and referred to himself as a “high roller,” which is an objectively amusing thing to say about oneself in the middle of a fantasy football debate.
After the Reds and Giants played on Saturday, Pederson decided to clarify what happened by releasing screenshots of that group chat in which he made a rather tame joke about the Padres, causing Pham to become enraged and then drop out of the football league โ which Pederson admitted involved a lot of money.
The craziest part is that Pham’s outrage over a group chat joke and losing money in the fantasy league prompted him to lose even more money due to the loss of three-game checks for slapping Pederson in the outfield. At the very least, the lesson is to never approach someone at work about anything like this in front of your managers.
When Joc Pederson delivered the troll job to Tommy Pham, they were both in the Dodgers-Padres rivalry, with Pederson’s Dodgers playing the role of big brother.
The meme appears to have eaten away at Pham over time, so much so that he had to confront it two years later.
This weekend will be interesting to see if there are any more pyrotechnics between Joc Pederson and Tommy Pham.
