The Rashtrapati Bhawan confirmed on May 23 that President Ram Nath Kovind has approved Anil Baijal’s resignation and named Vinai Kumar Saxena as the new lieutenant governor of Delhi.

His appointment comes only days after Delhi’s current LG Anil Baijal resigned due to “personal reasons” after operating as the national capital’s topmost administrator since December 2016.

According to a statement from Rashtrapati Bhawan, President Ram Nath Kovind, “has been pleased to appoint Vinai Kumar Saxena to be the Lt. Governor of National Capital Territory of Delhi with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office”

Who Is Vinai Kumar Saxena?

Vinai Kumar Saxena is an AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre IAS officer from the 1969 batch. He was the Khadi and Village Industries Commission’s Chairman. Presently, he is 64 years old.

He was born on March 23, 1958. He was also a Kanpur University graduate and had a pilot’s licence. He is also a corporate scientist in action and a philanthropist in vision. And his vision and actions were so timeless that he always put his enormous social commitment first, from the corporate to the non-profit sectors.

He was the one who raised the issue of why Mahatma Gandhi’s monument was placed alongside an ice cream parlour and a trash can, rather than in the wing where other great leaders’ statues were displayed at London’s Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum. While doing so, he penned a letter to Gordon Brown, the then British Prime Minister, in which he stated,

The Museum staff issued an apology after receiving this letter, and the Mahatma’s monument was promptly relocated to the ‘World Leaders’ Exhibition’ hall on the ground level.

His Career

With his commercial leadership in Western India on a wide variety of corporate concerns, including petroleum and ports, he combines technical, legal, social, and cultural talents.

While being IAS, he has always been at the forefront of every problem relating to social development, such as water resource development, social malpractice prevention, disaster management assistance, and clean city development.

In 2000, the people of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh praised his creation, the National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL), an NGO he founded in 1991, for exposing anti-dam campaigners’ actions.

Mr Saxena began his career as an Assistant Officer with the JK Group in Rajasthan and has never looked back. After 11 years of service with the company’s White Cement facility in various roles, he was promoted to General Manager in 1995 to oversee the projected Gujarat Port Project.

He quickly ascended through the ranks to become CEO and subsequently Director of the Dholer Port Project. His sophisticated character gained praises, even from his opponents, as Director of Port Project and Founder-President of the globally regarded NGO-NCCL.

Mr Saxena was appointed Chairman of KVIC in October 2015, and since then, he has not only researched the undiscovered streams of Khadi and Village Industries, but has also introduced many ambitious projects as well as products, such as the ‘Honey Mission,’ ‘Kumhar Sashaktikaran Yojana,’ ‘Leather Artisans’ Empowerment,’ Khadi Prakritik Paint, Project RE-HAB, Khadi Fabric Footwear, and Plastic-mix.

On March 18, 2019, the President of India appointed Saxena as a “Member of University Court” of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi for three years in his role as Visitor of the University.

He was later appointed to the “Research Council” of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) – Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology on September 9, 2020.

Afterwards, the Government of India nominated him as a member of the Padma Awards Selection Committee for the year 2021 in November 2020. The Committee is in charge of reviewing the nominees for the Padma Awards.

On March 5, 2021, he was nominated to the National Committee to Commemorate the 75th Anniversary of India’s Independence by the Indian government.

From 2016 to 2020, Prime Minister has nominated him to serve on the ‘Empowered Committee’ for the examination of the “Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Administration.”

Now, he has been appointed as a Lt. Governor of Delhi. While the details of his family are not known, he is married and has children.
