Ariarne Titmus beat Katie Ledecky’s world record in the 400m freestyle at the Australian championships on Sunday, touching in 3 minutes 56.40 seconds to cement her dominance following a breakthrough Tokyo Olympics.

Last year, the 21-year-old beat Ledecky in the Olympic pool to win gold, and she has now beaten her arch rival’s world record of 3:56.46 established at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Who Is Ariarne Titmus?

Ariarne Elizabeth Titmus is a swimmer from Australia. She is the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the women’s 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle events, having won both in the 2020 Summer Olympics. Apart from this, she also holds world records in both the long and short course 400-meter freestyle.

Presently, she is 21 years old. Her height stands at 1.77 m (5 ft 9.69 in) and her Weight is 63 kg (138.89 lbs). She is currently single.

She was born in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia, on September 7, 2000. Titmus and her family, including her father Steve Titmus, mother Robyn Titmus and her younger sister Mia, relocated to Brisbane, Queensland in 2015 in search of better training possibilities.

Ariarne attended St. Patrick’s College and was an active swimmer there. She later went on to complete her higher education at St. Peters Lutheran College.

Dean Boxall, a South African native, is her coach. He has been a swim instructor for over twenty years and is presently the director of the Brisbane-based swim club St Peters Western.

Ariarne has been swimming since she was in elementary school. She used to swim in high school and college and won several competitions.

She competed in the Commonwealth Games and the FINA World Swimming Championships in 2018. She was chosen for the World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, and the International Swimming League in Las Vegas, Nevada, the following year.

She competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2021. Due to the covid 19 epidemic in 2020, the matches were postponed. In the 400-meter freestyle final, she finished at 3:56.69. She won a gold medal for Australia after edging out American swimmer Katie Ledecky by less than a stroke with a spectacular effort.
