The Premier League was created in 1992 when the First Division’s clubs left the Football League to form a new commercially autonomous league that negotiated its own broadcast and sponsorship deals. For the first season, the newly established league had no sponsor until Carling committed to a four-year £12 million agreement, which began the following season. C
arling added specific prizes for players, such as the Golden Boot, the following season. The Player of the Month and Player of the Season honors, on the other hand, were first given out during the 1994–95 season. The inaugural Player of the Season award was handed to Alan Shearer of Blackburn Rovers, who won the Premier League title and the Golden Boot with his side that season.
