For years, the most coveted scene in international badminton had been Chinese head coach Li Yongbo, sitting in Row 1, feet up on the rails, left ankle on right, chewing a cigar and relaxing like a smug villain as two Chinese battled it out in the finals. Gopi asked Siyadath to perform a Yongbo since India was doing a China.
This would be Siyadath’s first all-India final as a coach, as well as Sindhu’s first-ever international title. He would later sit in for Gopichand on the sidelines when Kidambi Srikanth won his maiden Super Series in China. He’d stroll up to Srikanth in the break, not quite in the ‘feet up’ stance, and provide precise directions don’t smash hard in the first game, go for body smash at 20-19, don’t smash from baseline in the second, increase hand-speed when in doubt.
