The Khelo India University Games began on Saturday at the Jain Global Campus, with MG University emerging as the main winners of the day, delivering surprises on the volleyball court and destruction on the basketball court.

The first men’s volleyball match of the day saw MG University Calicut defeat the University of Calicut, demonstrating the unpredictable nature of the sport. Calicut University is the defending All India Inter-University champion. MG University triumphed in successive games (25-11, 25-17, 25-23) to set the tone for the day, cheered on by their university footballer teammates.

While volleyball activity opened off the day, other sports had already begun at locations across the city. With six matches, the women’s team badminton was hotly contested. The match between Osmania University.

Savitribai Phule University was the highlight of the day, with the former prevailing 2-1 – a reversal from the All-India Inter-University earlier this year. The knot was also an excellent example of one sibling helping the other in times of need.

What Happened On Day 1:

Savitribai Phule seized the lead after Vaishnavi, the elder sibling, lost her first singles to Mrunmayee Deshpande. The sister act prevailed in the doubles to tie Osmania, before Bhairavi, 19, won her singles match to clinch Osmania’s victory.

In the first round of the basketball competition, the University of Madras women’s team defeated Guru Nanak Dev University 88-68. Their men, on the other hand, suffered a painful defeat to Kurukshetra University later in the day, falling by just three points.

Later in the evening, back at the volleyball courts, MG University’s women’s team, despite some nervousness in the late stages, followed up their men’s performance. Playing against a high-quality Adamas University team, the Kottayam girls prevailed in four sets of high-quality volleyball.

Anna Mathew, a member of the U21 Kerala squad that won the event at the Khelo India Youth Games 2020, commented after the match that the event was one of the greatest on the schedule.

“The facilities, travel, and court quality have always been top-notch at the Khelo India Games, and I’ve enjoyed my previous experiences.” Mathew, 22, has previously played for India’s U19 squad.

The first day of the competition coincided with the start of Mallakhamb. Competitors in the indigenous sport demonstrated their abilities on three different apparatus: rope, pole mallakhamb, and hanging mallakhamb.

Weightlifters and shooters will take center stage on Day 2 of the KIUG, with some of the first medal events taking place. Women’s football and boxing will also get underway.
