PDC Order of Merit and Previous World Ranking Method History

The Order of Merit is comparable to the one used on the European Tour of golf. The prize money won during the previous two seasons is computed, and the standings are based on that list. In 2007, the Professional Darts Corporation implemented an Order of Merit system based on prize money earned over two years for the main Order of Merit and separate one-year rankings for other PDC Pro Tour events.

Colin Lloyd was the world number one player in the PDC for most of 2005 and 2006 under the former ranking points system, despite the fact that most of the major titles were shared by Phil Taylor, Raymond van Barneveld, and John Part. Lloyd won two major titles as well, although he gained most of his ranking points in the less prestigious non-televised events, where Taylor did not usually compete. Similarly, Alan Warriner was world number one four times before winning his sole PDC major, the 2001 Grand Prix, while Taylor won eight world titles and a slew of other trophies during that time.

Since the World Darts Council began fresh rankings in 1993, 11 players have held the title of World Number One. Since the PDC transitioned to the two-year earnings-based Order of Merit system in 2007, only Phil Taylor, Raymond van Barneveld, Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price, and Peter Wright have held the position.
