The Atlanta Hawks franchise was first known as the Buffalo Bisons, and this name stuck for a total of thirteen games. After realizing that the Tri-City area was too small to realistically support an NBA team at the beginning of the 1950s, the team relocated and became known as the Milwaukee Hawks. In 1967, the Hawks were sold to Atlanta real-estate developer Tom Cousins following a dispute over the team’s home arena.
