In fact, they were founded back in 1946. Since then, the Hawks have won five division titles and three conference championships. They also made it to the playoffs four times during this period.

Atlanta Hawks fans are known for their passionate support of the team, and this is part of what makes the Hawks such a well-known household name to this day. This is a quick look into the Atlanta Hawks, complete with origins, key rivals, and key players.

Origins

The Atlanta Hawks franchise was first known as the Buffalo Bisons, and this name stuck for a total of thirteen games. They were then relocated and given a more appropriate name of the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. While the Hawks were known as the Blackhawks, they were part of the original seventeen teams to form the NBA.

After realizing that the Tri-City area was too small to realistically support an NBA team at the beginning of the 1950s, the team relocated and became known as the Milwaukee Hawks. In 1967, the Hawks were sold to Atlanta real-estate developer Tom Cousins following a dispute over the team’s home arena.

Once the team were settled in Atlanta, they went on to achieve huge things. They demonstrated a great deal of impressive talent in the following years as a team and individual players.

Home Arenas

Because they moved around a fair amount during their origins, the Hawks have called many arenas home. These include the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium around 1946, Wharton Field House, Milwaukee Arena, St Louis Arena, Alexander Memorial Coliseum, and Lakefront Arena.

The Hawks are currently based in State Farm Arena, which they moved to in 1999. Until 2018, this location was known as the Philips Arena. The venue is a hub for hockey, basketball, and local concerts, and it has an impressive capacity for more than 20,000 fans. This continues to be a hub of activity that can keep up with an NBA team.

Key Players

The Hawks have had their share of talented players in the past and present. Pop Gates was an instrumental player who led a great deal of the team’s early success. He was one of the first African-American players to compete in the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1946.

Another player of note during the Hawks’ origins was Bob Pettit, who was drafted in 1954. He was the first NBA player to be named Most Valuable Player (MVP), and he is known for scoring fifty points during the Hawks’ final game of the 1958 series.

The achievements of these players went on to set the standard for Hawks members today. Some of the more recent players of note include Alex Len, who is a Ukrainian powerhouse on the court. While he was only a member of the Hawks for two seasons, Len scored career highs and career bests during this time.

Bogdan Bogdanović is another member of the Hawks who set new standards for rookie players within the NBA. He was a key player in his junior and senior national team, and currently has a four-year contract with the Hawks. In spite of injuries, Bogdanović has an impressive 90% accuracy and is still a key player to look out for on the court.

Rivals

Some of the most well-known rivals for the Atlanta Hawks are the Boston Celtics. It is one of the most long-lasting rivalries, spanning more than 50 years. In spite of losing the majority of their games against the Celtics, the Hawks have been known to make a memorable series with their rivals. Both teams are members of the Eastern Conference within the NBA, which is part of the reason why there is such a tense rivalry.

On the other hand, the New York Knicks rivalry with the Hawks could be considered as a more recent development. This is because of the dramatic clash which happened in the 2021 season between the two teams.

Orlando Magic arguably have the most intense rivalry with the Hawks. Though they have only competed against each other three times so far, each game has proven to be memorable. While Magic defeated the Hawks in 1996 and 2010, the Hawks got their payback the following year when they secured 4-2.

Summary

The Hawks may have had some challenges during recent decades, but they are truly showing their determination to get back on their feet. The next season of the NBA is sure to be a nail biter, and Hawks fans will be on the edge of their seats.
