Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula One champion, said on Monday that he will modify his name to commemorate his mother Carmen Larbalestier as he prepares to compete for a record 8th world title.
In a move that will take effect “soon,” the 37-year-old revealed he will add his mother’s surname to his own race as Lewis Hamilton-Larbalestier.
In an on-stage interview at the Expo international exposition in Dubai, the Mercedes driver commented,
My mum’s name is Larbalestier and I’m just about to put that in my name.
He went on to say that he did this because he didn’t completely get the concept that when individuals marry, the lady loses her name. He continued,
And my mum, I really want her name to continue on with the Hamilton name.
Hamilton said he was “working on” changing the team’s name, but said it would not happen before the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix this week.
