While people are still scratching their heads over the creature, some believe it to be a puff-faced water snake which has moss growing on its body owing to its habitat. The scales on the top of the skin were made of keratin.

The puff-faced water snake is also called masked water snake and it is a mildly venomous snake in the Homalopsidae family found in tropical areas of Southeast Asia.
