The BCCI SGM asked for more time to decide on if it would be viable to go ahead with the world cup in the country as scheduled in October-November
For the BCCI, the SGM conducted on Saturday was a crucial one. With scores of pivotal issues to address to, the cricket’s governing council in the country sat down to iron out issues of great concern.
While there was good news on the IPL front with the remainder of the tournament set to resume n UAE, there was no fresh clarify on the T20 World Cup. Slated for later this year, the marquee tournament is scheduled to be organised in India.
BCCI SGM: No Decision On The T20 World Cup
However, given the ongoing calamitous second wave of COVID in India, there are ongoing apprehensions regarding conducting the competition as planned. The BCCI SGM was envisaged to offer new insights into what the BCCI’s plans were regarding the tournament, however the body has deferred the decision till late.
Jay Shah asserted the same in the aftermath of the SGM. In a statement issued by the BCCI’s secretary, Shah said that the BCCI would be asking for more time from the ICC to reach a concrete decision.
Jay Shah: The BCCI SGM further authorised the Office Bearers to seek an extension of time from the ICC to take an appropriate call on the hosting of ICC T20 World Cup 2021.”
While the BCCI remains coy over organising the tournament in India, the chances of it going ahead as scheduled were hinted at. The BCCI is confident of getting a tax waiver for the event from the Indian government, a move which strongly alludes towards ongoing talks of holding the T20 World Cup 2021 in the country.
T20 World Cup Venues
In the last Apex Council meeting of the BCCI, the body had nailed down on nine venues for the T20 World Cup 2021. Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Dharamshala, Ahmedabad and Lucknow were identified by the body.
The competition is set to be held in October-November in 2021.
