Another setback for the London giants follows the imposition of sanctions on club owner Roman Abramovich by the UK government.

Three signed a three-year contract with an option to extend with Chelsea ahead of the 2020/21 season, becoming the club’s major partner and jersey sponsor. The deal worth 40 million pounds per year has been put on hold ‘until further notice,’ with the telecoms firm demanding that their branding be removed immediately. The deal was worth 200 million pounds in total.
“In light of the government’s recently announced sanctions, we have requested Chelsea Football Club temporarily stop our sponsorship of the club, including the removal of our logo from jerseys and around the stadium until further notice,” according to a statement from Three.

The decision comes as the UK government takes tough measures against Abramovich, the Russian businessman who owns Chelsea Football Club, in response to his country’s invasion of Ukraine. However, 3 is the only company to have pulled out of sponsorship of Chelsea at the moment with other companies including Nike all throwing their weight behind the club.
With fines looming, Abramovich openly put the team up for sale in March, but no agreement has been reached. Any sale looks to be on hold, with Abramovich’s assets blocked, posing a variety of challenges for the club.
Ticket sales will be suspended, meaning that only season ticket holders and those who have already purchased tickets will be allowed to attend games at Stamford Bridge. Merchandise sales and transfer discussions will also be suspended.
The implications of Abramovich’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin are still being felt, with Three’s sponsorship adding yet another twist in the end of his 19-year tenure as Chelsea owner.
