Johnson’s Potential Chelsea Bid News

Chelsea fans should be quite terrified of Woody Johnson’s Jets. The Blues’ future owner is in charge of a team with the NFL’s longest postseason drought. His record off the field isn’t much better.

Chelsea supporters should be concerned after ESPN claimed that Johnson is preparing an offer to acquire the club from Roman Abramovich, citing “sources close to the issue.” The Jets have set a new standard for mediocrity or even worse under Johnson.

On Monday, the Jets’ unhappy supporters claimed on Twitter that they would gladly give Johnson over to Chelsea if it meant he was no longer with the team. That, however, does not appear to be part of the plan. Chelsea would be another toy train for him to play with in his man cave.

Chelsea supporters never hated Abramovich since he helped turn the club into a perennial powerhouse, winning 21 trophies in his nearly 19 years as owner, including five Premier League crowns and two Champions League triumphs. In that period, Johnson’s NFL squad has not won a single game. And, while Johnson is wealthy, he lacks Abramovich’s financial resources, having paid for most of Chelsea’s success with his own money.

That isn’t to suggest Chelsea can’t or won’t succeed under Woody Johnson’s leadership. However, a Super Bowl is still a long way off. Johnson isn’t the only one interested in Chelsea.

Still, replacing Abramovich with Johnson would appear to be replacing a Russian oligarch with an American oligarch in charge of one of the world’s greatest and most valuable football teams — an English club with a 117-year history.

In the last six years, Johnson’s club has only won 27 of 97 games. Fans of the New York Jets have waited 53 years for a Super Bowl victory; Chelsea supporters may have to get used to holding their breath if Johnson takes control.
