The All India Football Federation (AIFF) and their business partners Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) are putting up the event. It is officially known as the Hero Indian Super League because of its sponsorship links with Hero MotoCorp.
There are presently 11 teams in the league. The tournament season usually lasts from November through March. During the league stage of the competition, each team competes in a round-robin format against all other clubs. The team with the most points at the end of the league stage is crowned Premiers and awarded the League Winners Shield trophy, while the top four clubs qualify for the play-offs. The ISL Final determines the Champions, who are honoured with the ISL Trophy at the end of the season.

The ‘League Winners Shield’ for the Hero Indian Super League was introduced by Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) (ISL). For the club that wins the league stage, the silverware comes with a monetary award of Rs 50 lakh. The League champions would be the first Indian team to compete in the AFC Champions League group stages. The Shield will be awarded to the team during a playoff game at home.
The League Winners Shield, weighing around 5 kilogrammes and measuring 22 inches in circumference, is inspired by worldwide football traditions and the Hero ISL trophy’s design tones. The silver football is surrounded by a wreath that represents the winners of the beautiful game.
The league stage winners qualify for the AFC Champions League directly, while the ISL Final winner qualifies for the AFC Cup qualifying-playoffs.

Since the Indian Super league’s inception, four clubs have been named champions: ATK Mohun Bagan (3), Chennaiyin (2), Bengaluru (1), and Mumbai City (1). However, Goa and Mumbai City have won the League Winners’ Shield once each since it was introduced in the 2019–20 season.

After a convincing 5-1 victory against Odisha FC at the Athletic Stadium in Bambolim, Jamshedpur FC made a crucial stride towards securing the Indian Super League (ISL) Winner’s Shield. Before Paul Ramfangzauva (45+1′) pulled one back for the Kalinga Warriors, Daniel Chima Chukwu (23′, 26′) scored a first-half brace to bring his season record to nine goals. However, Owen Coyle’s side won for the sixth time in a row thanks to goals from Ritwik Das (54′), Jordan Murray (71′), and Ishan Pandita (87′).
With only one encounter remaining against ATK Mohun Bagan, the Men of Steel must avoid defeat in order to win the league stage.
