Gazprom’s Sports Sponsor
The company owns and sponsors the Russian Premier League football club namely FC Zenit Saint Petersburg including the other departments of the club on Basketball and Volleyball.
The company also became the owner and sponsor of FC Schalke 04, a German football club that competes in the Bundesliga at the cost of €25 million annually. However, the club has now announced that it is removing the company’s logo from its jerseys following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“In light of the events, developments and escalation of the past days, FC Schalke 04 has decided to remove the logo of the main sponsor, Gazprom, from the shirts,” the club’s statement said.
The players will carry the name of the team replacing the sponsor across their shirt, the club further stated. The second division club has been sponsored by Gazprom since the year 2007.
It also sponsors Red Star Belgrade, a football club that competes in Serbian SuperLiga and a cycling team named Team Katusha and Itera.
Not just these, Gazprom also sponsors UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup that ran until 2015 from 2012. The same year in 2012, the company became the official Global energy partner of the UEFA Champions League 2012 winners Chelsea which continued for three years till 2015 along with partnering officially FIFA tournaments from 2015 to 2018.
Along with football and other sports, it also sponsored the Minardi F1 team in 2002-2003.
