What is Teqball, its meaning, history, major players and story behind the game

Asian Games 2026 are taking over social media platforms, as the game unveiled its curtains on September 19, 2026, with its grandiose opening ceremony and the highlight of the games are Teqball, a new game field. Let’s find more about this table game

What is Teqball, its meaning, history, major players and story behind the game

For unversed, at Aichi-Nagoya 2026, Teqball is making its Asian Games debut, giving the relatively young sport an enormous continental platform. India’s campaign has also brought the sport into the spotlight, with Quimcy D’Souza competing in women’s singles and India entering men’s doubles.

But how did a sport that didn’t exist until the 2010s reach the Asian Games? Let’s go back to the beginning.

Meaning of Teqball

Teqball is a football-based sport played on a specially designed, curved table. It combines elements of Football, Table Tennis, Juggling & freestyle football, Speed.

The game involves a coordination and strategy. Unlike football, in Teqball, players don’t run around a pitch. Though it is a table game, it doesn’t use rackets.

Instead, they use permitted parts of their body, such as the feet, thighs, chest and head, to control and return a football over the curved table.

The official ball is a size-5 football, and matches can be played in singles or doubles. The table is the key.

Its curved surface changes the trajectory of the ball, forcing players to develop extraordinary control, timing and anticipation.

Here are some of the rules that immediately changes the character of the sport:

  1. There is no physical contact between opponents.
  2. Players cannot touch their opponent or the table during play.
  3. The result is a sport built almost entirely around.

History of Teqball

Teqball was created in Hungary. The idea can be traced to Gábor Borsányi, a former football player, who experimented with football on conventional table-tennis tables.

The problem? A flat table wasn’t ideal. The ball didn’t naturally return in a way that made continuous football play easy.

So Borsányi and computer scientist Dr Viktor Huszár began developing the concept of a curved table. Businessman György Gattyán later joined the founding team.

Together, they transformed the idea into a sport and equipment system. The sport’s development is generally traced to 2012, while its public emergence accelerated around 2014, when the first public video of Teqball was released during the 2014 World Cup.

And that timing was almost perfect. Football’s global audience was already enormous. The founders were effectively asking:

Idea Behind the Curved Table

The curved table isn’t simply there to make Teqball look unusual. It solves a technical problem.

On a flat table, a football doesn’t naturally behave in a way that allows the kind of controlled rallies the founders wanted. The curved surface causes the ball to return toward the player in a predictable trajectory.

That allows players to perform repeated touches and develop controlled rallies. The founders also wanted a sport where:

  • Luck would be minimised.
  • Physical contact would be removed.
  • Technical ability would be central.
  • The rules would be relatively easy to understand.

Gábor Borsányi has described the objective as creating a sport where the better player or team would have a greater opportunity to prevail through skill rather than luck.

How is Teqball Played?

This is where things get fascinating. A Teqball match can be:

  • Singles
  • One player against one player.
  • Doubles
  • Two players against two players.

Objective

Return the ball over the net onto the opponent’s side of the table without allowing them to make a legal return. But executing that objective is extremely difficult.

What is a 3-Touch Rule in Teqball?

One of Teqball’s defining rules is the maximum of three touches.

A player or team can use up to three touches to return the ball. They can use different permitted body parts, but hands and arms cannot be used. This creates spectacular sequences such as:

Chest → thigh → foot → table

or

head → thigh → foot → return

The player has to calculate:

  • Where the ball is coming from;
  • How high it will bounce;
  • Which body part to use;
  • How much power to apply;
  • Where the opponent is positioned;
  • And how to construct the next shot.

All within seconds.

However, there is another important restriction.

Players cannot touch or return the ball with the same body part twice consecutively. So the sport demands variation. That prevents a player from simply repeating the easiest movement. It forces athletes to develop a broad technical vocabulary.
