Carshawnda Hatter, a 33-year-old mother from Chicago,was attacked by students Monday while walking home from Orville Bright Elementary School on the Far South Side. Hatter and her 9-year-old son were transported to Trinity Hospital in serious condition.

The attack took place on Chicago’s Far South Side on Monday afternoon, as 33-year-old Corshawnda Hatter and her son were walking in the 10600 block of South Bensley Avenue. According to police reports, “a group of offenders approached and struck the victims multiple times.” Following the attack, they were both rushed to a nearby hospital and initially listed in serious condition.
Hatter reported that the violence stemmed from ongoing bullying at Orville Bright Elementary School. She also revealed that her daughter was also present during the incident and witnessed her brother and mother getting attacked. The incident has led parents, officials, and residents of the area to demand accountability and sparked deeper concerns about school bullying and neighborhood safety.

Meanwhile, Hatter gave an emotionally charged speech outside the school the next morning, describing the trauma of watching her son being beaten. He stated:
I can’t sleep because I wake up in the middle of the night with that vision in my head of my son calling my name to help him and I couldn’t do nothing for him. That really hurt me the most.”
She also posted no social media, adding:
No mother should be attacked in her own community while trying to protect her children.”
Meanwhile, State Sen. Willie Preston also backed her, saying:
No mother should be that helpless and be targeted by children inside of her own community.”

Official police statements and investigation reports
In response to the attack, the Chicago police have confirmed that the case remains under active investigation. CPS also released a statement saying that it “prioritizes the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families” and called the assault “horrifying.” The statement further continued:
We are working collaboratively with City departments and agencies to provide support to the victims of the attack.”
Mayor Brandon Johnson also condemned the violence and stated that he was “deeply disturbed” after viewing the footage. He further added:
That type of behavior is unacceptable in our city.”
Brandon emphasized that schools must provide safe environments and that the city must:
redouble our efforts to teach our young people that violence is never an acceptable response.”
