She was a senior at Cleveland High School with dreams of becoming a nurse and was honored with an honor walk at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, where her family and friends gathered to pay their respects as she was wheeled into surgery to donate her heart and lungs.

Kimber Mills taken off life support

The family of Kimber Mills on Tuesday made the heartbreaking decision to take her off life support after she was put in a grave condition following a shooting at a bonfire party. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies initially responded to reports of a shooting that took place just before 12:30 a.m. on Saturday near Highway 75 North in Pinson. Upon arrival, they found three people, including Kimber, with multiple gunshot wounds, while a fourth victim was already on the way to the hospital by car.

According to investigators, the shooting stemmed from a fight that broke out during the bonfire, and authorities later identified the suspect as 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead who Kimber didn’t know personally. He has since been charged with one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder and remains in custody without bond. Kimber suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head, and doctors placed her on life support at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

After showing no signs of recovery, her family confirmed that they have taken the painful decision to remove her from life support. Following her death, doctors and nurses held an honor walk in tribute as they took her lifeless body for an organ donation surgery.

Family

Kimber Mills came from a close-knit family, although their names and identities weren’t revealed. Following her death, her sister shared that over 100 people visited Kimber in the hospital to say goodbye. The family also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love, prayers, and donations made through a GoFundMe campaign and shared that the funds will also help the other victims of the shooting.

“Our sweet baby sister went to be with the Lord at 7:08 last night. She had the biggest Honor Walk gathering the doc has ever seen,” her sister said after her demise.

Kimber Mills was a student at Cleveland High School, where she was an active student-athlete and a proud member of the cheerleading team. She was in her senior year, and after her graduation, she had plans to attend college and hoped to continue cheering while pursuing her studies with her wanting to pursue nursing in college.
