Police on Monday arrested a man named Billy Joe Cagle inside the Atlanta airport after police received an urgent tip from his family. The family warned authorities that Cagle was armed and threatening to commit a mass shooting. Upon receiving the tip, officers found him in the airport and initially discovered no weapon at the time of apprehending him.
However, investigators later located an AR-15 assault rifle in his parked car, confirming that his threats were credible. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum has since called the incident a “tragedy averted” and emphasized that Cagle’s arrest likely saved many lives. According to reports, Billy had previously made social media posts suggesting that he was heading to the airport with violent intentions.

Age 49 White American Billy Joe Cagle is a native of Cartersville, which is a city located about an hour north of Atlanta. According to public records from the Georgia Department of Corrections, he was convicted of marijuana possession over two decades ago. As of now, officials have not released his current age but described him as a longtime resident of the area. During a press briefing, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens referred to him as “mentally challenged” and added that such conditions, combined with weapon access, could lead to a major disaster.
Cagle has a prior criminal history, making his possession of the firearm illegal and officials believe he may have been experiencing a mental health episode at the time.
According to APD Chief Darin Schierbaum, Cagle planned to return to his truck, get the rifle, and carry out the attack in the crowded terminal area and is facing charges of: terroristic threats, Criminal attempt to commit aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
