What is a sextuple win in football?
A sextuple refers to when a club wins six official trophies in a single calendar year. This includes the domestic league, domestic cup(s), Champions League, and three major international or intercontinental competitions like the Super Cup, Club World Cup, and national super cup. Up until now, only two clubs have managed to secure a sextuple – FC Barcelona in 2009, and Bayern Munich in 2020.
Pep Guardiola’s FC Barcelona secured a sextuple in 2009 with the following titles:
- La Liga
- Copa del Rey
- UEFA Champions League
- Spanish Super Cup
- UEFA Super Cup
- FIFA Club World Cup
Meanwhile, Hansi Flick’s Bayern Munich secured a sextuple in 2020 with the following titles:
- Bundesliga
- DFB-Pokal
- DFL-Supercup
- UEFA Champions League
- UEFA Super Cup
- FIFA Club World Cup
Traditionally, a sextuple requires a team to win six major titles in a calendar year like:
Domestic League (e.g., LaLiga).
Domestic Cup (e.g., Copa del Rey).
Champions League.
UEFA Super Cup.
Domestic Super Cup (e.g., Spanish Super Cup).
FIFA Club World Cup or its equivalent, the Copa Intercontinental.
However, with the reintroduction of the Copa Intercontinental and the Club World Cup discussions of a septuple (seven trophies in a year) have emerged.
