Who Is Jeremy Bujakowski And His Early Life

Jeremy was born on 30th March 1939 in Druskininkai to Polish parents who were travelers Halina Korolec-Bujakowski and Stanislaw Bujakowski, as they traveled from years 1934 to 1936 by motorcycle from Druskininkai to Shanghai.

Jeremyโ€™s father served as a Warrant Officer of the No.101 Repair and Servicing Unit in the Polish Air Force in the UK during World War II.

Jeremy Bujakowski shifted to India at a very young age of seven with his parents. He did his studies at St Joseph’s North Point, Darjeeling, and completed his graduation from St Xavier’s College, Kolkata, before he left for the United States to complete his higher studies.

Though Jeremy was born in Lithuania to polish parents he acquired Indian citizenship due to his fatherโ€™s involvement in the building of oil refineries in India and which subsequently resulted in him becoming a naturalized citizen.

During his time in Boise in Idaho, he started out skiing, and very soon he was awarded a full scholarship at the University of Denver.

His Alpine Skiing Career and Representing India At The Winter Olympics

Bujakowski etched his name in the books of history by becoming India’s one and only athlete who represented India at the 1964 Winter Olympics that held in Innsbruck, Austria. He took part in the Men’s downhill event in Alpine Skiing but unfortunately couldnโ€™t conclude the race due to an injury.

But Jeremyโ€™s career also had a considerable amount of injuries that threatened his career in skiing. During the Olympics downhill event he had to suffer from a broken back and concussions, which damaged internal hemorrhages along with a very severely fractured leg that ended his maiden Olympics.

Even in between the interval of every six months since that dangerous incident, he went through four operations in that period where each time the surgeons tied, again and again, the nerves in order to prevent bleeding.

But despite all the dreadful and painful sufferings, Jeremy was willing to return back to the sport.

He finally returned to the 1968 Winter Olympics which was held at the Grenoble in France where he took part in the Alpine Skiing, where he competed in the downhill slalom and giant slalom events. In the 1968 Olympics, he was the only athlete to represent India and also, became Indiaโ€™s โ€˜Chef de Mission’ or the head of the delegation along with that he appointed his American wife Janet Evans as โ€˜Chef dโ€™Equipeโ€™ to coordinate in matters related to technical aspects of the sport.
