Star sprinter Animesh Kujur added another feather to his cap by breaking the national 100m record, clocking an impressive 10.18 seconds at the Dromia International Sprint and Relays Meeting in Greece.

The 22-year-old showcased his explosive pace at the event held in Vari, a suburb of Athens, surpassing the previous Indian benchmark of 10.20 seconds set by Gurindervir Singh. The record-breaking performance came during a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver Label meet. Sotirios Garagganis of Greece followed with a time of 10.23 seconds, while Finland’s Samuli Samuelsson secured third place at 10.28 seconds.
Animesh Kujur, a 22-year-old sprinter from Ghuitagar village in Jashpur district, Balodabazar, Chhattisgarh, had recently carved his name into the history of Indian athletics. Competing at the Asian Athletics Championship, he clinched a bronze medal in the 200-meter race, setting a new national record in the process. His final time of 20.32 seconds placed him just behind Japan’s Towa Uzawa (20.12s) and Saudi Arabia’s Abdul Atafi (20.31s), making him only the second Indian to reach the continental podium in this event.

Animesh reportedly expressed immense joy after his medal-winning run. He shared that although his start wasn’t ideal, the way he handled the curve gave him the edge he needed to finish among the top three. Prior to this triumph, his personal best had stood at 20.40 seconds, recorded in Kochi. This new mark of 20.32 seconds signified a major personal milestone and underlined his growing presence on the Asian track circuit.
Animesh’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. His early education was shaped by his father’s transferable job, which often forced him to switch schools. He began his schooling at Wadner Mission Higher Secondary School in Mahasamund district, Chhattisgarh. After completing fifth grade, he moved to Kanker, where he continued his studies at St. Michael’s School. Family plays a central role in Animesh’s life. He is the eldest child of Amrit Kujur and Reena Kujur, and has a younger brother named Aniket Kujur.
His father is DSP Amrit Kujur posted in Baloda Bazar Traffic Police. Animesh who is a Odia Hindu by religion spent most of his childhood in the police staff quarters in Maoist-affected Bastar region, where his father served for more than two decades and his initiation into sports happened early as his mother played hockey and father was an athlete who switched to football.
