On June 29, 2025, a devastating ambush on Canfield Mountain, Idaho, turned a routine wildfire response into a deadly tragedy. Firefighters who arrived to contain a blaze around 1:30 p.m. local time came under sudden gunfire roughly 30 minutes later. Two firefighters lost their lives, and a third suffered serious injuries and was rushed into emergency surgery. Authorities later revealed that the attack was carried out using high-powered rifles.

Kootenai County Sheriff Richard Norris confirmed that a man’s body was discovered near a firearm on the mountain. While the identity has not been officially released, officials believe he was the lone gunman and assured the public that there was no ongoing threat to the community. The sheriff also suggested that the fire had been set intentionally as part of a premeditated plan to lure and target first responders.

A man armed with a rifle started a wildfire Sunday and then began shooting at first responders in a northern Idaho mountain community, killing two firefighters and wounding a third during a barrage of gunfire. A tactical response team used cellphone data to hone in on a wooded area where they found the suspect’s body with a firearm nearby.

Officials did not release his name, nor did they say what kind of gun was found as it was revealed, “We do believe that the suspect started the fire, and we do believe that it was an ambush and it was intentional.”

Sheriff’s officials said crews responded to a fire at Canfield Mountain just north of Coeur d’Alene around 1:30 p.m., and gunshots were reported half an hour later.

Governor Brad Little condemned the attack as a “heinous direct assault” on Idaho’s brave firefighters and urged residents to pray for the victims and their families. Although authorities have yet to confirm the deceased suspect’s identity, online speculation has pointed toward Travis Decker, a 32-year-old former soldier and fugitive.

Decker who is a Christian by religion is wanted for the murder of his three daughters — Olivia (5), Evelyn (8), and Paityn (9) — who were found suffocated with plastic bags near Rock Island Campground earlier this month. He had been on the run since June 2, living out of a 2017 GMC Sierra pickup truck and believed to be highly skilled in survival tactics. Due to his military background, experience with firearms, and long-standing evasion from authorities, some suspect that Decker could be connected to the Canfield Mountain ambush.

Decker is a Pewaukee native living in Wenatchee, Washington state and at the time of his girls’ disappearance, Decker was living out of his pickup truck or occasionally motels and campgrounds, police said. He also has extensive military training and went to mountain survival school.

Decker graduated from Pewaukee High School, where he was a member of the 2010 Pewaukee wrestling team and wrestled in the state finals.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest for three counts each of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping and Decker is a 32 year old white man with black hair and brown eyes. His height is 5’8” and he weighs 190 pounds and was last seen wearing a light-colored shirt and dark shorts.

According to social media users, the now dead shooter in Idaho fits the profile of a Travis Decker (32) who is a former U.S. Army infantryman who served from March 2013 to July 2021, deploying to Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne in 2014 and later training at Fort Benning.

After leaving the Army he struggled with PTSD, drifted between campgrounds around Wenatchee, WA, and was living out of a white 2017 GMC Sierra pickup and during a court-approved visitation on May 30 2025, Decker failed to return his three daughters—Paityn (9), Evelyn (8) and Olivia (5).

He failed to bring the girls back to his ex-wife, Whitney Decker, in Wenatchee, Wash. The three girls died of asphyxiation and their wrists were zip tied or showed signs of being zip tied, and they were all found with a plastic bag over her head.

Whitney and Travis were married for a little over 7 years and when they met, Travis had just gotten back from a tour in Afghanistan as an Army Ranger.

According to Cozart, the couple split in 2022 as a result of his mental health struggles. Whitney struggled to help Travis through severe paranoia, nightmares and insomnia but nothing seemed to change.

On June 2 deputies found the truck and the girls’ bodies at Rock Island Campground; each had a plastic bag over her head and at least one was zip-tied and Tucker is wanted on three counts of first-degree murder and kidnapping, with a $20,000 U.S. Marshals reward.

Decker had Googled how to flee to Canada and is skilled at off-grid survival, having lived in the wilderness for nearly three months and unconfirmed sightings have trickled in across the Northwest including McCall, ID, earlier this month.

There was speculation that Decker is the one behind the ambush of firefighters near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and he is considered armed, extremely dangerous, and may have grown his hair and beard to alter his appearance.

However, as of now, nothing like this has been officially confirmed with the shooter’s identity now revealed as Wess Roley.
