Has Malik Beasley been arrested amidst gambling investigations as his mugshot goes viral

Know all details about Detroit Pistons star Malik Beasley and the ongoing investigations against him as social media rumors claim he’s been arrested

Reports indicated that Malik Beasley, who is a free agent, has been facing the possibility of losing a $42 million contract due to a federal investigation linked to gambling. It was stated that the U.S. District Attorney’s office had initiated the probe, and both ESPN and the Associated Press had first disclosed the news, citing unnamed sources.

Has Malik Beasley been arrested amidst gambling investigations as his mugshot goes viral and why was he jailed

It was mentioned that the Detroit Pistons star had come under scrutiny in a case that could potentially result in a ban from the NBA. The league’s spokesperson, Mike Bass, had informed the press that the NBA was cooperating with federal prosecutors on the matter. Observers noted that this development followed a previous incident 14 months earlier, when Jontay Porter of Toronto had been banned after admitting to wire fraud in connection with a betting scheme.

Beasley’s lawyer, Steve Haney, was quoted as saying that an investigation did not amount to a criminal charge and that his client, like any other American citizen, was entitled to the presumption of innocence. Haney had clarified that no charges had been filed against the player at that point.

Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney said, “An investigation is not a charge. Malik is afforded the same right of the presumption of innocence as anyone else under the US Constitution. As of now, he has not been charged with anything.”

Despite him not being charged with anything as of yet as the investigations remain ongoing, social media claims of Malik being arrested along with his alleged screenshot went viral. It all began with a post on Twitter/X with it claiming that Malik had been arrested owing to the findings of the federal investigation related to gambling.

However, the claim is false with the mugshot used in the now viral post from June 2021 when Beasley began his jail sentence stemming from an incident where he made felony-level threats of violence.

Beasley had checked into the jail with the mugshot being from the time when he checked into Wright County Jail after in 2021 February, the 24-year-old was sentenced to 120 days in jail, to be served after the NBA season ended for the Timberwolves. He had pleaded guilty to the charges in December, 2020 and as part of the agreement, Beasley was required to serve 120 days in person at the workhouse with him eventually released after serving 78 days of his sentence.

Sources revealed that Beasley had been engaged in advanced discussions with Detroit over a three-year deal worth $42 million, though those negotiations had reportedly been halted in light of the probe. It was further reported that if found guilty, Beasley could face a ban from the league.

The Wall Street Journal had earlier reported a similar case involving Terry Rozier, who had been under investigation due to unusual betting patterns from a 2023 game. Rozier, who later joined the Miami Heat, had not been charged.

Commentators highlighted that losing the deal would deal a major blow to Beasley, who had recently finished as the runner-up for the Sixth Man of the Year award and had been seen as a respected presence in the locker room. He had also set a Pistons record with 319 three-pointers during the 2024–25 season, averaging 16.3 points per game with a 41.6% success rate from beyond the arc.
