Radhika Pandey, an eminent economist, policy researcher, writer, and a columnist for ThePrint, passed away at the age of 46. She breathed her last on Saturday at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in New Delhi, shortly after undergoing an emergency liver transplant. Known for her deep expertise in macroeconomics, Pandey held the position of Associate Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP).
Her career spanned over two decades, marked by significant contributions to public policy and academia. Prior to joining NIPFP, she served as a lecturer at the National Law University, Jodhpur. Since 2021, she had been a regular voice in public discourse through ThePrint, where she contributed weekly columns and videos under the banner “MacroSutra,” offering lucid insights into pressing financial and macroeconomic issues.
She first got typhoid, which must have affected her liver because she was in hospital with jaundice with her having to undergo liver transplant after which she was admitted to the ICU and Radhika was put on a ventilator to help her breathe. Her oxygen dependence kept rising and by Saturday morning she passed away.
Age 46 Radhika is survived by her husband Sanjay and son Kanishk.
Radhika graduated with Economics Honors from Benares Hindu University and got her Master’s degree and Ph.D in Economics from JNV University, Jodhpur and she started her career at the National Law Institute in Jodhpur, combining economics with law, and joined the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) in 2008, where she continued to serve as Associate Professor.
Pandey also played a key role in shaping economic governance, having served as the lead coordinator of the Task Force for the Public Debt Management Agency, constituted by the Ministry of Finance in 2014. Her passing leaves a profound void in the academic and policy landscape, where her clarity of thought and dedication to evidence-based economics had earned wide respect.
Pandey had been admitted to ILBS Hospital earlier in the month following a case of acute liver failure brought on by jaundice. Despite her condition, she had insisted on recording her final MacroSutra video for ThePrint from the hospital itself, underscoring her unwavering commitment to her work.
