An Air India First Officer named Clive Kunder was recently killed in a tragic plane crash alongside Captain Sumit Sabharwal. Following the tragic crash, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that both pilots were part of the 12-member crew. According to reports, the plane sent a distress “MAYDAY” signal to Air Traffic Control just moments after departing at 1:38 p.m. The plane seemingly crashed into a densely populated area, killing hundreds more innocent lives.

Clive who was a Christian by religion, a First Officer with roots in Mangaluru and a resident of Mumbai, was among the crew members on board the ill-fated Air India flight AI 171 that crashed into a residential area in Meghani Nagar, Ahmedabad, shortly after take-off on Thursday afternoon.

He was the son of Clifford Kunder and is the cousin of actor Vikrant Massey.

The aircraft was carrying 232 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members, bringing the total on board to 244 and identified senior cabin crew include Shradha Dhavan and Aparna Mahadik. Others on duty were Saineeta Chakravarti, Nganthoi Kongbrailatpam Sharma, Deepak Pathak, Maithili Patil, Irfan Shaikh, Lamnunthem Singson, Roshni Songhare Rajendra and Manisha Thapa.

Among the passengers were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals.

Clive Kunder began his aviation journey as a trainee, excelling in both theory and hands-on training. After earning his commercial pilot license, Clive joined Air India and started flying domestic routes before making the transition to international operations. Over time, Clive became First Officer on the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, one of Air India’s flagship aircraft. Clive managed to accumulate over 1,100 flight hours and was known for his professionalism and attention to detail.
