However, the nature of the video is still unknown along with why its gone viral with it not available anywhere despite trending. Meanwhile, according to state media, a Chinese paraglider Peng Yujiang claims to have survived being unintentionally launched 8,500 meters (27,800 feet) into the sky over northwest China.

While testing new equipment over the Qilian mountains at 3,000 meters above sea level, Peng Yujiang, 55, claims that a rare updraft or air movement called a “cloud suck” dragged him into a cloud formation some 5,000 meters higher.

The footage from Saturday’s events, which was captured by a camera installed on Mr. Peng’s glider, went viral after being shared on Douyin, China’s equivalent of TikTok.

US broadcaster NBC has now questioned the video, which showed Mr. Peng gripping the glider’s controls while his face and a large portion of his torso were covered in ice crystals.

Peng Yujiang braved intense cold and strong winds without the use of breathing masks. Despite having low oxygen levels and frostbite, he had captured the whole 72-minute journey on video.

“It was terrifying. Everything was white. I couldn’t see any direction. Without the compass, I wouldn’t have known which way I was going. I thought I was flying straight, but in reality, I was spinning,” Peng told the Chinese media.

The preliminary analysis suggests that the viral video’s first five seconds may have been produced by artificial intelligence. Peng is shown gliding at a high height with his legs hanging in the widely shared video, although it appears to be edited.

According to NBC News, Doubao AI’s branding was clipped out of Peng’s video, indicating that the AI tool used by the ByteDance-owned company most likely produced at least the first five seconds of the viral video.

On May 25, the missing segment of the viral video was posted independently to Facebook along with the watermark of the company.

“It’s unclear if the remaining footage of Peng gliding through the sky, which differs from the first five seconds, is authentic or not,” the news outlet said.

The assertions were supported by GetReal Labs, an AI-verification business, which said that the examination of the video provided evidence of AI use.

The video has now been taken down by news outlet Reuters, which first released the film without the AI logo. The video has also been taken off by other news organizations.
