Ali Khan Mahmudabad, a political science professor at Ashoka University in Haryana, was arrested for his comments on the press conferences of Operation Sindoor by two female armed forces officers.
According to reports citing his attorneys, Yogesh Jatheri, the general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Yuva Morcha in Haryana, lodged a complaint that led to the detention of Ali Khan.

Ali Khan Mahmudabad is a historian, political scientist, writer, poet, and Associate Professor at Ashoka University in Sonipat, Haryana, where he serves as Head of the Department of Political Science.
According to sources, 42-year-old Ali Khan was arrested under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for actions that were detrimental to preserving communal harmony, encouraging armed insurrection or subversive operations, and disparaging religious beliefs.

“Haryana police has illegally arrested Dr Ali Khan. Taken to Haryana from Delhi without transit remand. FIR at 8 PM. Police reached his home the next morning at 7 AM,” Delhi University professor Apoorvanand said in a post on X. “The Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court must intervene. Please see the Pravir Purkayastha judgment of the Supreme Court,” he said.
Days after being called by the Haryana Women’s Commission for his alleged Facebook comments that “disparaged women officers in the Indian Armed Forces and promoted communal disharmony,” Ali was taken into custody.
After Operation Sindoor on May 7, the Commission took suo motu notice of his social media posts.

Colonel Sofia Qureshi, who had represented the Army during media briefings about Indian military operations against terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, was praised by Hindutva commentators, which Mahmudabad, the head of the university’s political science department, pointed out in a social media post on May 8.

Age 42 Ali Khan Mahmudabad is a professor at Ashoka University in Sonipat, Haryana, and a writer, poet, political scientist, and historian.
Ali Khan was born on December 2, 1982. Ali is the son of Mohammad Amir Mohammad Khan, also referred to as Raja Sahab Mahmudabad, who fought for his ancestral property, which the government had taken under the Enemy Properties Act, for nearly forty years of his life.
His grandfather Mohammad Amir Ahmad Khan was the Raja of Mahmudabad and a longtime treasurer and significant funder of the Muslim League in the years preceding India’s partition.
Ali received his education at La Martiniere School in Lucknow, later attending King’s College School in the UK before graduating from Winchester College in 2001 and obtained his MPhil and PhD in Historical Studies from the University of Cambridge and also studied Arabic at the University of Damascus, Syria. His writings on Syria, Iran, and Iraq have appeared in several publications, including in National Geographic.
Ali is married to the daughter of Haseeb Drabu, a former minister in Jammu and Kashmir and in 2017, he joined the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh.
