The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to pay homage to the recent Pahalgam terror attack victims in the upcoming Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Mumbai Indians match.

The high-profile IPL clash between the two sides is set to take place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

The tragic attack that began around 2:30 pm on Tuesday in Pahalgam claimed 26 innocent lives, including two foreign nationals.

Notably, the Resistance Front, which is a known proxy of the banned terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has reportedly claimed responsibility for the recent massacre.

BCCI to pay homage to Pahalgam terror attack victims

The BCCI has seemingly announced that they will honor the victims of the recent Pahalgam terror attack during the upcoming SRH vs. MI match. Following the decision, all players from both teams, along with match officials, will wear black armbands, symbolizing mourning and unity. All the attendees will also observe a one-minute silence before the start of the game to set a somber tone for the evening.

Besides the act of solemnity, the match will also not feature any cheerleader performances or fireworks. The BCCI has ordered all these to stand in solidarity with the victims and their families.

Government response

In response to the recent attacks, Union Home Minister Amit Shah swiftly arrived in Srinagar and immediately traveled to Baisaran, where the tragic attack occurred. During the visit, he reassured the survivors and grieving families that authorities would bring justice to those responsible. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on an official trip to Saudi Arabia at the time of the attack, immediately cut short his visit and returned to New Delhi.

The Jammu and Kashmir government, led by Omar Abdullah, in a show of support, announced substantial compensation for the victims. The government announced a ₹10 lakh compensation for the families of those killed and a ₹2 lakh compensation for the seriously injured. Victims with minor injuries are also subject to receiving ₹1 lakh each. The terror attack has also caused the Kashmir Valley to observe its first complete shutdown in 35 years.

Public Retaliation

The Pahalgam terror attack has also caused intense public outrage as citizens came out to the streets in the form of peaceful protests across multiple regions. Thousands of demonstrators, carrying placards and candles, voiced their condemnation of the attack. Moreover, major political parties like the National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), People’s Conference, and Apni Party have all joined together with trade associations, civil society groups, and religious organizations to immediately enforce a shutdown across Kashmir.
