Muhammad Abbas registers fastest-ever fifty on ODI debut
Pakistan-born Kiwi cricketer Muhammad Abbas recently went viral after scoring the fastest-ever fifty during his ODI debut. Abbas, who was playing for New Zealand against Pakistan, scored a half-century in just 24 balls. He broke the previous record held by India’s Krunal Pandya, who set the record back then with 26 balls. Abbas’ 52 runs off 26 balls helped New Zealand secure a formidable total of 344-9.

Muhammad Abbas, full name Muhammad Arslan Abbas, is a young and upcoming cricketer who was born on November 29, 2003, in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. He is popularly known as MO Abbas and mainly plays as an all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls as a left-arm medium-fast bowler. Abbas grew up in a cricket-loving household and was introduced to the sport at an early age. Despite being born in Pakistan, Abbas grew up in Wellington, New Zealand, where his family moved to after his father took up a coaching role.

Muhammad Abbas was born to parents Azhar Abbas and Hemlata Sharma and has a brother named Anil Sharma. Azhar, his father was a former first-class cricketer who played across Pakistan as well as in New Zealand before transitioning into coaching.
The left-arm seam bowler’s father Azhar Abbas was also a First-Class cricketer in Pakistan and turned up for sides like Peshawar and the Pakistan Railways before moving to New Zealand in mid-2000s and representing Wellington and Auckland in the final stages of his career. Azhar is now the assistant coach of the Wellington Firebirds.

Muhammad Abbas started out his domestic career at the Karori Cricket Club, where he gained prominence in age-group cricket. He eventually got selected for Wellington’s domestic squad and made his first-class debut on February 25, 2023, against Otago. He later made his List A debut against Canterbury on December 7, 2023, where he continued to showcase his versatility. Muhammad then made his T20 debut on December 21, 2023, against Otago.
Owing to his consistent performances in domestic cricket, Muhammad eventually earned a spot in the New Zealand A squad in August 2023. Muhammad Abbas recently made his much-anticipated ODI debut against Pakistan on March 29, 2025, at the McLean Park in Napier. The youngster made an immediate impact, scoring a record-breaking 24-ball fifty, the fastest ever on an ODI debut.
