Sameer MD embroiled in controversy surrounding Dharmasthala Soujanya Case
Sameer MD recently covered one of the most controversial topics on his channel, about the infamous Dharmasthala Soujanya case. The case dates back to 2012 and involves the r*pe and murder of a 17-year-old girl named Soujanya. As of now, the crime still remains unresolved. Sameer’s deep dive into the case brought all kinds of renewed public attention and reignited discussions about justice and accountability.
However, he was embroiled in controversy for the wrong reasons following allegations that he accepted ₹30 lakh in bribes. Several reports suggested that he received the bribe as payment to cover the case, but Sameer has denied all accusations. He revealed that he was instead struggling financially and even received threats after his personal details were leaked.
Vittal Gowda, Sowjanya’s uncle, meanwhile dismissed the allegations and said, “The call for justice for Sowjanya has been happening for more than a decade now. We didn’t have to pay anyone then, we don’t have to pay now. We are not in a position to pay anyone.”
Interestingly, the controversy got even deeper after Sameer MD’s video on the Soujanya case mysteriously disappeared from YouTube. Meanwhile, in another twist, the Cowl Bazar police station in Ballari district registered a suo motu complaint against Sameer. They have booked him under Section 299 (offending religious sentiments) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). In the complaint, Cowl Bazar sub-inspector M Ningappa stated how Sameer had made several alleged comments against Veerendra Heggade, who is the Dharmadhikari (head) of the Dharmasthala Temple.
Ningappa stated how Sameer “indirectly” alleged that Veerendra and his family members were involved in the r*pe and murder of Sowjanya as well as several other murders. As such, “This video hurts the religious sentiments of those who revere Dharmasthala and the Dharmadhikari.”
Sowjanya, a second-year Pre-University student of the Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College, went missing on October 9, 2012 and was found dead the next day near the Nethravathi river, her hands bound to a tree with her shawl and the sole accused in the case, Santhosh Rao, was acquitted by a Bengaluru Sessions Court on June 16, 2023.
