Due to allegations that journalist Rana Ayyub “insulted” Hindu deities and propagated “anti-India sentiment” on social media, a Delhi court has directed the Delhi Police to file a formal complaint against her.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Himanshu Raman Singh of the Saket court said, “In view of the facts and circumstances, the complaint discloses commission of cognizable offences for which an FIR is warranted. Present application under Section 156(3) Cr.P.C is allowed. SHO Cyber Police Station, South is directed convert the contents of complaint as FIR and investigate the matter fairly.”

An FIR has been filed against 40-year-old Rana Ayyub under sections 153A (Promoting enmity on grounds of religion), 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class), and 505 (Statements conducing public mischief), the Delhi Police told the court in its response on Tuesday.
Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir is where Rana Ayyub who is a Muslim by religion was born on 1 May, 1984. She is 5ft 6in tall. Her father, Mohammad Ayyub Waqif, was a representative of the progressive writer’s movement and a writer for the Mumbai-based journal Blitz. Her uncle, Abdul Haq Azmi, was a senior lecturer at Darul Uloom Deoband and a renowned Hadith scholar. While her mother’s name isn’t known, she has a sister named Iffat Shaikh as well. Details about her relationship status and if she has a husband or boyfriend aren’t known.
She received her degree in English literature from Mumbai’s Sophia College and then did her post graduation in Social Communications and Media from Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi. Her schooling was completed in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmur. While her exact net worth isn’t known, the Enforcement Directorate had attached assets worth over ₹1.77 crore in connection with a case allegedly involving journalist Rana Ayyub back in 2022.

Rana Ayyub was employed by Tehelka, a political and investigative news publication with headquarters in Delhi. She claims that a report she wrote helped put Narendra Modi’s close friend Amit Shah in jail for several months in 2010.
In September 2019, Washington Post nominated Ayyub as Contributing Global Opinions Writer with the paper. An open letter from Ayyub protesting the contentious selection of actor Gajendra Chauhan as the Chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) was published by HarperCollins India in October 2020. After Ayyub’s assets worth more than ₹1.77 crore were frozen by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in February 2022, she came under investigation.
The National Press Club presented Ayyub with the International John Aubuchon Award on June 28, 2022. Ayyub received the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) International Press Freedom Award on October 23, 2024.
