The incident happened in a Bullet Brawl game on Chess.com on Saturday after Magnus Carlsen, playing with black pieces against an account that goes by Nayemhaque22, resigned after 50 moves in a Bullet Brawl game to see his rating drop by -16.

Ryan Rashid Mugdha beats Magnus Carlsen

Ryan Rashid Mugdha is a young Bangladeshi chess prodigy who recently took the chess world by storm after managing to beat one of the greatest chess players of all time. The young prodigy managed to beat Magnus Carlsen, the reigning Chess World Champion. The match took place online on January 18, 2024, on Chess.com, which is the largest online chess platform. Mugdha notably played the match using his coach, Naim Haque’s account.

The game took place in the “bullet” format, which is a rapid chess variation where players have just one minute to finish their moves. Most FIDE Masters, International Masters, and Grandmasters usually follow this format. Mugdha unexpectedly got matched with Carlsen through the platform’s random pairing system. As the two players engaged in the match, Carlsen made the queen move to the wrong square after an accidental mouse click. Mugdha took the chance to create an opportunity for a win.

Following the match, Mugdha’s coach Naim stated:

I teach Mugdha chess, and he always loves to play online. I let him use my ID, and later, he suddenly called me, saying he had beaten Carlsen. At first, I couldn’t believe it. Then he sent me screenshots and all the game details, and I was amazed.”

Ryan Rashid Mugdha is a young and upcoming chess player and the son of Mahbubur Rashid, a native of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is currently nine years old and a third-grade student at South Point School in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is the reigning Under-10 Junior Champion in Bangladesh and most recently represented Bangladesh in the Asian School Chess Championship, which took place in Bangkok last December.

Mugdha’s father is Mahbubur Rashid while his coach is Naim Haque.
