New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium is poised to host the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup from January 13 to January 19, marking a historic moment for the sport. With 16 teams from both the men’s and women’s divisions representing six continents, this tournament symbolizes a significant leap in the global growth of Kho Kho, a traditional Indian sport.

In total, 24 teams will compete, divided into groups based on rankings, with India entering the tournament as a favorite in both divisions.
Currently, there is no official update regarding the final schedule of the upcoming tournament. However, anticipation is high as India is set to face Pakistan in the inaugural match on January 13. Additionally, the Indian team’s skipper will be announced on January 8, adding to the excitement leading up to the event.
“The final teams and the captains for India A and India B in both men’s and women’s sections will be announced on January 8,” said Sudhanshu Mittal, the president of Kho Kho Federation of India during a ceremony to unveil mascots Tara and Tejas and the World Cup Trophy.
“The two teams will be fielded keeping in mind the hectic seven-day schedule where each team will be playing multiple matches every day,” he added.
Visas for Pakistan players are still awaited. The tournament features 24 countries, including the USA, England, Germany, Australia, and Brazil, competing in a league-cum-knockout format for both men’s and women’s teams and Indonesia will send only women’s team, while the others will field squads in both categories.
The tournament will be begin on January 13, 2025 in the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Delhi starting 5:00pm IST.
The quarterfinals will be on January 17, semifinals on January 18 and the final is slated for January 19 and a total of 615 players and 125 support staff will participate.
Men’s Category: Group Breakdown and Key Matches
The Men’s competition features 20 teams divided into four groups:
Group A: India, Nepal, Peru, Brazil, Bhutan
Group B: South Africa, Ghana, Argentina, Netherlands, Iran
Group C: Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, South Korea, USA, Poland
Group D: England, Germany, Malaysia, Australia, Kenya
The Men’s matches kick off with India facing Nepal in the mega tournament opener at 8:30 pm IST. The league stage will culminate on January 16, followed by the playoffs beginning on January 17.
The Men’s final will take place on January 19 at 8:15 pm IST, promising a thrilling conclusion to the championship.
Women’s Category: Group Breakdown and Key Matches
The Women’s competition mirrors the Men’s format, with 19 teams divided into four groups:
Group A: India, Iran, Malaysia, South Korea
Group B: England, Australia, Kenya, Uganda, Netherlands
Group C: Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Germany, Bangladesh
Group D: South Africa, New Zealand, Poland, Peru, Indonesia
The Women’s opening match sees England taking on Australia on January 14 at 11:45 am IST. For the Indian team, their first match of the tournament is against South Korea on January 14 at 7:00 pm IST.
The group stage concludes on January 16, paving the way for the playoffs on January 17. The Women’s final match is scheduled for January 19 at 7:00 pm IST, setting the stage for a spectacular finish to the week-long extravaganza.
Playoff Details and Format
The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will qualify for the quarterfinals. From there, the tournament progresses to the semifinals and finals, ensuring high-stakes competition. Fans can expect nail-biting encounters as teams battle it out for the coveted title.
Notably, this event will be highlighted by two distinguished trophies— a blue trophy for the men’s championship and a green trophy for the women’s event. The men’s division will showcase strong teams from Asia, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Indonesia, South Korea, and Malaysia. African teams such as Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa will also compete, along with European representatives from England and the Netherlands. North America will be represented by Canada and the United States, while Brazil and Australia will represent South America and Oceania, respectively.
