At the age of 83, Nicholas Mangione aka Nick Sr his grandfather, who passed away in 2008, was the founder of Turf Valley Resort, Hayfields Country Club, and Lorien Health Services, among other ventures.
He also owned WCBM-AM, a conservative talk radio station. Alongside his wife Mary, Nicholas raised 10 children and lived in a $1.9 million mansion on their country club grounds. Luigi Mangione, is one of Nicholas’s 37 grandchildren, reportedly volunteered at Lorien Health Services in 2014.
His family’s commitment to medicine and community extended to his mother, Kathleen Zannino Mangione, who runs a boutique travel company, and his sister, MariaSanta Mangione, a doctor and medical resident at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Luigi grew up in Towson, Maryland, and attended the prestigious Gilman School, graduating as valedictorian in 2016. He went on to study software engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, later working at TrueCar in Santa Monica until early 2023.
He is believed to have suffered a spinal injury that year, sharing an x-ray image on social media. Despite his privileged upbringing, Luigi reportedly harbored resentment toward the healthcare industry, allegedly sparked by the treatment of a sick relative.
Brian Thompson Attack Case
Brian Thompson, CEO of United HealthCare, was fatally shot outside a Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan on December 4. Thompson had traveled to the city to lead an investor meeting.
The CCTV footage captured the harrowing moment when he was shot at point-blank range. Shell casings found at the scene bore the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose,” referencing healthcare industry practices.
Mangione was arrested on December 6 at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being recognized from widely circulated images. He was found with a firearm suspected to be a 3D-printed “ghost gun.” A manifesto allegedly expressing anger at the healthcare industry was also recovered.
