Recently, Patrick Bamford, who plays as a forward from Leeds United revealed the real reason why footballers raise their hands before taking corners, a routine frequently misunderstood by football enthusiasts.

Usually a corner kick begins with the ball placed just inside the corner, the taker stepping back and raising his/her hand. Many football enthusiasts assume this gesture as a signal to teammates about the potential short corner or the incoming ball.

However, speaking on the matter, Bamford revealed that the hand raise carries a deeper strategic meaning. As per the statement given by him, “One hand might signal a near post delivery.”

In addition, he also revealed that, the “two hands could indicate aiming for the far post.” Though it also may “reflect a pre-agreed plan from the dressing room, like targeting a specific area or player.”

While speaking on the matter, the footballer emphasized that hand gestures aren’t the only signaling method.

Who is Patrick Bamford?

Patrick Bamford, whose full name is Patrick James Bamford, born September 5, 1993, in Grantham, England. Standing at 6 feet 1 inches (1.85 m) tall, Bamford is an English professional footballer. He also made one appearance for English National team in 2021.

In the same year, Bamford made his senior debut for England. At the age of 18, the player began his career in 2011 and made his debut for Nottingham Forest.

A month later, he transferred to Chelsea for £1.5 million but never made a first-team appearance. Later, he was loan spelled at various clubs, including Middlesbrough, where he won the Championship Player of the Year for 2014–15.

In 2017, after returning to Middlesbrough for £5.5 million, Bamford moved to Leeds United in 2018. He was instrumental in Leeds’ 2019–20 Championship title win.

Contract, Salary and Net Worth

Reportedly, Bamford earns £2,080,000 yearly for Leeds and £40,000 weekly. The 31-year-old’s contract will expire on June 30, 2026.

Outside of football, Bamford co-hosts a BBC Sounds podcast, “My Mate’s a Footballer,” with comedian Joe Wilkinson. The English footballer walked down the aisle in June 2024, with his long-time partner Michaela Ireland and became a father in 2022.
