Career
Letexier, who is ranked has a UEFA’s elite category referee, has built a reputation for handling high-stakes fixtures. He officiated the 2021 Coupe de France final between Monaco and PSG. Additionally, he also served as Video Assistant Referee during the UEFA Europa League 2021 final between Villarreal and Manchester United. His full career stats and cards details can be found here.
In August 2023, he oversaw the UEFA Super Cup clash between Manchester City and Sevilla. This Anfield encounter between Liverpool vs Real Madrid was his fourth time officiating a Real Madrid match in the Champions League.
Among these, his most memorable was the thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester City in the 2024 quarter-final first leg, during which he unintentionally struck Erling Haaland in the face while gesturing.
Letexier also refereed Madrid’s 4-2 victory over Napoli and their 2-0 win over Chelsea in the 2022-23 quarter-final first leg. Arguably, the highlight of Letexier’s career came in July 2024, when he officiated the UEFA Euro 2024 final between Spain and England in Berlin.
At 35 years, the French national became the youngest referee to oversee a European Championship final, breaking Anders Frisk’s record set during Euro 2000.
In this latest assignment, Letexier managd the meeting between two of Europe’s most successful clubs. Liverpool are in a commanding position after their win in the revamped UCL format, while Real Madrid’s progression as a seeded team remains in question.
Jeers for French referee Francois Letexier as the teams go off. To say he's been erratic would be generous.
