Justice Sanjiv Khanna bio
Sanjiv Khanna is the newly appointed Chief Justice of India who was born on May 14, 1960. He comes from a legal family in Delhi, and is the son of former Delhi high court judge Justice Dev Raj Khanna. Khanna is also the nephew of renowned former Supreme Court judge HR Khanna. Khanna gained noteworthy during rulings in his support for EVMs during elections. Earlier this year in April 2024, Justice Khanna lead a bench rejecting all concerns about EVM tampering and made a ruling against returning to paper ballots.
The 64 year old is a Punjabi Hindu and is married with two children but the names of his family members aren’t known.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna appointed as Chief Justice of India
Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been officially appointed as the 51st Chief Justice of India on Monday, succeeding Justice DY Chandrachud. During the event, President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He takes over from Justice DY Chandrachud, who retired on Sunday.
Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, defence minister Rajnath Singh, vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar, as well as former CJI D Y Chandrachud were all present during the official oath-taking ceremony. Ahead of the swearing, the Supreme Court judges, lawyers, and staff held a farewell programme for Khanna on his last working day, Friday, November 8.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna obtained his law degree from Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre.
Sanjiv Khanna career
Khanna has had a rather professional career over the last few decades. Prior to his appointment as the Supreme Court judge on January 18, 2019, Khanna practiced law for several years. He also briefly served as a judge for the Delhi high court. Justice Sanjiv Khanna has also held various roles like executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). He started out practicing law with the Delhi Bar Council back in 1983.
Throughout his career, he has been involved in several landmark cases like affirming the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs). He also played a role in overturning the electoral bonds scheme and supporting the abrogation of Article 370. Khanna also played a key role in granting interim bail to former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Aside from the above, he has also served as the senior standing counsel for the Income Tax Department as well as the standing counsel for the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Khanna has also served as an additional public prosecutor and amicus curiae for various criminal cases at the Delhi high court.
